Biography

Joel was a Friend (Quaker)

Joel Davis was born on the 29th of October 1815 in Randolph County, North Carolina.[1] He was the son of Joel Davis and Penninah (Newby) Davis.[1] Joel's birth was recorded in the Back Creek Monthly Meeting book.[1]

Joel married Nancy Stanley.[2] The blessed event took place on the 5th of April 1843 in Guilford County, North Carolina.[2] His brother Joshua signed his mark as a witness to the marriage.[3] Joel and Nancy started their family in Guilford County.[4]

  3. Julia P. "Julie" (Davis) Neal b. 30 Sep 1846 NC[4][5][6]

Joel was thirty-five when the 1850 census was taken.[4] He was working as a farmer in Guilford County, and listed his birthplace as Randolph County.[4] Nancy, age thirty, took care of the home and children. Only Betsy Ann (7) and Jesse (6) attended school.[4] Julia, Israel, and Juliana would have been too young and stayed home with Nancy.

Their family had grown considerably by 1860.[7] Joel, almost forty-five, was still farming in Palmyra, Iowa.[7] He owned $600 of real estate and $400 of personal estate.[7] Nancy, at thirty-nine,[7] would have had her hands full with the family. Betsy Ann, age sixteen, stayed home with Nancy.[7] Jesse, Julia, Cyprus, Luanna, and Winslow attended school.[7] The youngest four stayed home with Nancy and Betsy Ann.[7] According to the birthplaces of the children, the family had moved to Iowa five years before.[7]

Nancy died on the 8th of June 1863 in Iowa.[8] Her small tombstone said simply "Nancy Wife of J. Davis died aged 42 years 7 months 10 days." Joel lived on for some time after, as he homesteaded land in Wyoming in 1894. His age was listed as 78, born about 1816 in North Carolina.[9]

Joel died on the 9th of January 1897 in Douglas, Wyoming. He was laid to rest in the Pioneer Cemetery in Douglas.[10] Per his burial record, his "short obituary" was thus:

It is with regret we announce the death of Joel Davis, of this city, father of our esteemed fellow citizen, Jesse Davis, which occurred on the 9th, last. The funeral took place yesterday, services being held at the Methodist Church. The deceased was eighty-nine years of age, and leaves four sons and two daughters to mourn his death: Jesse Davis, of Douglas; Joel Davis, Denver; W. H. and I. C. Davis of Des Moines; Mrs. R. Taylor, Nebraska and Mrs. H. L. Hayworth, Oklahoma. We extend our heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved ones.
Bill Barlow's Budget, Jan. 13, 1897

Research Notes

Joel Davis, Jr. was proven, via DNA and traditional research, to be the biological father of Henry Gustave Henley.[11]
The marriage bond for Joel and Nancy had smudged ink where the year was. It has been indexed as 1848 making it appear as a second marriage. If you look at the cover for the bond, and look carefully at the bond itself; 1843 is the correct year. (Silva-1055 00:54, 2 May 2021 (UTC))
It is mentioned in The Des Moines Register in 1873 that Joel Davis walked fifteen miles, from Palmyra, .. to make a payment on a note due on the 1st, and how it "should secure notice of the press and commendation of the merchants. His example is well worth following."[12] "And the story grows in the telling" as they like to say. When printed in The Bulletin-Journal in Independence, Iowa Joel walked fifty miles, from Palmyra to Des Moines, to pay a note that was due.[13] The distance in modern times is 17.1 miles.
